I just had an interesting conversation with my daughter about negativity which opened the door to the discussion about negativity and what it really is about. I used to suffer from chronic depression so much so that I couldn’t leave the house. When I think back to those times, my thoughts were so filled with sadness, sorrow and hopelessness which brought an onslaught of negativity, in more ways than one. I got therapy worked through my struggles and started exercising and although I felt better than I was, there was still that nagging voice of negativity that would chatter on even when things were considerably better in my life. So what was it?... It was me. After my spiritual journey had begun, it allowed me to look at my situation throughout the years with brand new eyes and brand new perspective. I didn’t change; I just woke up from a fog that had been with me for many years. One of the things that I realized was that I was the main reason I was in such a funk for so many years. When I changed my outlook on things, I changed my perspective which changed everything. It began with a single thought, which I would write on a sticky note pad in which I would repeat in my mind like a mantra even if I didn’t believe it. Such as ‘My life is great and I am grateful for it’, or Today is an amazing day and I am happy. Before I knew it, I started to feel better, then I started to take notice of the words I was writing and saying and I started to say them out loud and before I knew it my mind didn’t have a negative thing to say to myself anymore. We have choices everyday on how our day is going to be, the best way to safe guard against negativity is to be positive. When something undesirable happens, I immediately try to find the blessing or the lesson in the situation and I give thanks for it. In my daily walking meditation I set my intention for the day with gratitude. “It’s a beautiful day full of blessings and miracles” and it usually is. I choose positivity, I choose to live a negative free life and so can you, start small, write it down, say it to yourself, say it out loud, your mind and body has no choice but to listen and eventually follow your command.
